Guide to Safe Boating: Part 1

The National Safe Boating Council has a guide to safe boating out, however, it is 85 pages long. Who has time to read 85 pages of anything these days? Not very many people that I know. So over the next few days, this blog will take the guide and take a few pages and give the "Cliff-notes" version of what the guide says. Please note that this advice is given with no guarantees and Southeast Marine Sales and Service holds no responsibility for the advice given here.

  • Two Methods of Registering your Recreational vessel: Through the State or Federally, through the Coast Guard.
    • The numbers must be displayed on both sides of the boat and towards the front.
  • Equipment Requirements
    • Life jackets: All vessels must carry one for each passenger and any boat 16 feet or longer must carry a throwable flotation device.
    • Children under 13 MUST wear a life jacket while on a boat unless they are in an enclosed cabin.
    • Everyone must wear a Coast Guard approved jacket while engaging in water sports (ie: tubing, waterskiing, wake boarding, etc.)
Check back tomorrow for Part 2!
